Watching this deal from the commentators table in Round 5 it took me a long time to see the winning defence – it was only 45 minutes after the session had ended that I spotted it. Can you do better?
North leads the three of spades and declarer wins with dummy’s jack and plays a heart to the jack and queen. Unable to play a second spade North can only try a diamond and declarer can win in dummy and continue with the jack of diamonds. If South ducks declarer plays a third round of the suit and South wins and plays a spade. Declarer wins, cashes the king of diamonds and plays the eight of hearts, overtaking it with dummy’s nine.
Do you see how the defenders can come out on top?
North must lead the king of spades at trick one!
